HD DVD takes another beating as Rock ditches it for Blu ray
Rock drops the in-built HD DVD drive in its high-end gaming laptops and crams in a Blu-ray one instead
By NickO on 03 March 2008
Rock has, like many others of late, jumped on the Blu-ray bandwagon and decided to remove the in-built HD DVD drive from all of its new laptops and offer a Blu-ray one as an optional upgrade instead.
There’s only one catch - you’ll have to fork out an extra £100, whereas the HD DVD drive was free. If you don’t fancy paying that, you’ll have to stick with a conventional DVD-RW drive.
If you’re worried that your £2000 gaming investment has now become obsolete, if you’ve got an HD DVD drive already, worry not. Rock has promised that it will offer all its customers, including those with outstanding orders, a downgrade to a DVD-RW drive, or an upgrade to Blu-ray.
Although having to pay another £100 to watch high definition movies might seem a bit much, I think having the option is actually better because not everyone wants to go high definition just yet.
Hopefully Rock will be discounting the price of its new laptops as a result of this move.
