The Holy Grail: Run Windows Vista on an ASUS EeePC

There are rumours all over the web that ASUS's fantastic EeePC may soon be able to run Windows Vista, but one YouTube video suggests that it already can…

ASUS's new EeePC sub-notebook is really rather good; it's tiny, robust and light enough to throw in your bag. It also only costs £200, despite offering full Wi-Fi, web browsing and flash memory. The only thing is, it's hardly a speed demon, and as a result Windows Vista won't install on it; you're stuck with the Linux-based operating system it ships with or with Windows XP.

There have been mixed reports over the last week regarding Microsoft's plans to offer a cut-down edition of Windows Vista especially for the EeePC, but these are currently little more than rumours; Asus itself won't say for sure, but did tell us that even if it was to happen, it wouldn't be until sometime next year.

All things considered, I was about to begrudgingly cast it aside for its failings in the operating system department, but then something caught my eye. A blurry video on YouTube, depicting Windows Vista running on the EeePC. Sadly, the filmmaker isn't going to win any awards for his camerawork, but it's still clearly an EeePC, and it appears to be booting into Windows Vista really quite fast.

This video's actually been around for a couple of weeks, which surprises me, as no one else seems to have noticed it. The only way I'm going to get some straight answers is to get myself an EeePC and try the install for myself…
