Brand Your Vista Machine

By toejam on 01 March 2007

Copy the following into Notepad and modify the values to your own needs which are bold:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation]
"Logo"="C:\\Whatever\\Whatever"
"Manufacturer"="Whatever"
"Model"="Whatever"
"SupportPhone"="Whatever"
"SupportUrl"="www.whatever"   If you want to hit an email  addy:  malto:XXX@XXX.XXX
"SupportHours"="Whatever

Create your Oem Logo with a maximum dimension of 120 x 120 pixels 32 or 24bit BMP (Bitmap Image)

Dump the image to where ever you like, not forgetting to modify the "logo"= line in your reg file above to the location on your machine where it resides.

In Notepad save the above file as a " .reg " file. Now execute the file after you have placed the bmp image to your chosen directory.

This is a neat tip that I tried to take advantage of but hit a problem instead. For some reason opening the .reg file I created does nothing. In the past (XP or Win 2k) double clicking and opening a text file with the "reg" extension would automatically execute the file and change the registry.

Has something changed withe Vista? I have UAC turned off so I don't think it is a permissions problem.

I am answering my own message, brilliant huh? I now know that your have to have a first line in the text file that reads "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"

That line gets the file to run. Now I only have to find out why it refuses to add the line that refers to the logo file location.
