Windows Live Messenger added to Bebo

Now users can combine contact lists and chat via the website
By Jon on 21 August 2007

Well, it's not media-darling Facebook, but it's close: Microsoft has struck a deal with to integrate Windows Live Messenger in social-networking site Bebo, currently big with the school-age crowd. Bebo users can now chat to the people in their friends lists by clicking an IM button in their profile, and import and export contact lists between the site and the Windows Live Messenger client.

The announcement follows the news from tracking company ComScore that Bebo is now bigger than both Facebook and social-networking king MySpace in the UK, with 10.7 million users in July. That's not as good news for Microsoft as it could be: the former MSN Messenger has always been more popular in Europe, so they'll be boosting existing users rather than grabbing new ones. If Bebo gets bigger in the States, where AIM still reigns supreme, it could be much more useful.

What do you think? Would you want to get Windows Live Messenger in your Facebook or MySpace profile, or are you happier keeping the lists separate so that long-lost schoolfriends are chatting all th time? Or are you determinedly resisting social networks altogther? Let me know in the comments.

Bebo is good, and this new feature will allow its users to quickly add new contacts onto the WLM contact list.
