Send pictures directly from your camera – without wires
That’s the future of the compact camera, according to Panasonic
By NickO on 14 January 2008
There’s only one way to upload pictures from a camera to a PC right now – with a USB cable. We’ve been tied to this method for many years now; the camera industry hasn’t yet provided us with cameras that can send pictures wirelessly, the way we're used to doing with our mobile phones.
But Panasonic is planning to introduce to the market a LUMIX camera with wireless connectivity, so you’ll finally be able to send photos wirelessly to your PC.
Apparently, you’ll be able to do this by uploading them straight to a Picasa Web Album (a photo-sharing service from Google) using the public Wi-Fi service: T-Mobile Hotspot.
That’s great if you want to put photos somewhere friends or family can look at them straight away if you're near a wireless hotspot, but what if you just want to put them on your PC when you’re near it, just like you would if you were sending photos from your phone to your PC via Bluetooth?
Panasonic hasn’t stated whether you’ll be able to do this, but it seems it would be pretty silly if you couldn’t.
This service will only be available for the US market when it launches, but I’m sure it won’t be long before it hits UK shores.
Sony has also announced that it will be developing a universal means of transferring data wirelessly between electronic devices, such as digital cameras and computers, called TransferJet.
