The future of search has started

Microsoft man talks about his vision of the future
By James Stables on 03 October 2007

Search is one of those things we take for granted. Since the dawn of the internet we have opened browsers and typed things in, oblivious to the huge efforts made by companies to try and provide the best answers.

It’s easy to forget, however, that search is a service and often consumers are left deeply unsatisfied.

Derrick Connell is the General Manager for Microsoft Live Search, and the man charged with providing the world with information when we need it. He spoke to Windows Vista Magazine at the UK launch of the new Live Search.

“The internet is changing the way we live. When I think about the information I have compared to what my father had, it’s unbelievable. We’re helping promote the information so the world is better off.

“Search is still very much in its infancy, and there is so much headroom for growth and development. We need technology which helps users ask questions, which in turn will help search providers get the right answers, he said.”

So what changes will we see over the next five years?

“On the consumer side we are going to see much deeper searches, especially in services such as eBay. We will soon see multipurpose search engines, which can delve into eBay listings, Facebook information and travel information,” Derrick said.

“People will want information on their mobiles to a much greater extent than they do now, and faster mobile internet and more public Wi-Fi will make this a reality very quickly.”
