Find out how fast your broadband really is

Is your Internet Service Provider telling you fibs? Find out with this broadband speed test
By NickO on 06 December 2007

Are you really getting 2Mbps from your internet connection? Probably. Is your 8Mbps or 24Mbps connection really that fast? Probably not – but there’s a way to find out for sure.

Go to www.speedtest.net and click on the little yellow pyramid nearest to where you live (in my case, it’s Maidenhead, UK). Speedtest.net will send a small amount of data to this test server and receive some too, to see how long it takes to get there and back.

The test results aren’t always the same though, so try it out a few times during the day and get an average figure. If it’s way below what you should be getting, then maybe it’s time to switch to another Internet Service Provider.

19MB!! I get 24MB broadband and I download at 6MB/s when downloading from Microsoft.

The other day while downloading a video, my download speed went to 4GB/s I got a bit confused and the 1.2GB video downloaded in a min and the video was not damaged...Anyone care to explain?

That's what they call "Small bursts" of internet flow from the backbone provider. But From what I know, small bursts only boosts you for around 2 seconds, and it only gives you a speed of 1MB+ not 1GB+ strange.
