Microsoft to slash Windows Vista prices

Global price cut to accompany SP1 release
By James Stables on 03 March 2008

Microsoft is to slash the price of Windows Vista to coincide with the consumer release of Service Pack 1.

The price cuts will affect all varieties of the Windows Vista family, especially upgrade versions in an effort to capture new customers, and existing users looking for extra functionality.

The price cuts will come into effect when Service Pack 1 is released later in the year, although some early movement will be seen on www.amazon.com in the coming weeks.

With Windows Vista entering its second year Microsoft is keen to build on the 100 million licenses purchases in the last 12 months.

Business adoption of the operating system has been criticized by some Microsoft observers, and while figures show correlation with previous editions of Windows, Microsoft is keen to develop its user base in 2008.

Brad Brooks, corporate vice president for Windows Consumer Product Marketing said:

“Windows Vista has been on the market for more than a year now, with more than 100 million licenses sold in its first year. While this is great progress, we see an opportunity to grow our business even more with some of the new editions we introduced with Windows Vista.”

With a slash in price those of us who have shelled out the full monty should be rewarded with a free upgrade to the next level.

In fairness Windows Vista has been on the market for over a year now. Feel for the PS3 users who have shelled out, only to have multiple price cuts. I can't think of a product which hasn't dropped in price after a year on the shelves.

Yer, I agree with both of you, I agree that people that shelled out the full price for Vista should get an upgrade, perhaps 50% of the next up (e.g. say home premium became £100, people who had basic could upgrade for £50.) For people with Ultimate, though maybe if theres going to be a Windows Vista Plus, they get it for free? I agree with James, too beacause, yeah it has been on the market for a year, and PS3 only slashed to contend with XBox 360! It also depends on how much the price is slashed on Vista, it may only be a tenner, which I could live without.

Why would they give current users a free upgrade? It's common for all products to have price reductions as time goes on. Early purchasers pay a higher price for the benefit of having the product before others and for a longer period of time.
Having said that however, I wouldn't mind a free upgrade ;)

I feel ripped off again this time by a global supplier who at a whim can drop the price because it is not selling. We should all think twice next time and wait it seems that is the best policy in this case.

I was under the impression that the price cuts for Vista will not be available to UK buyers. Has this policy now changed?

Though a "free upgrade" to those of us that did jump in head first as soon as Vista was available would be nice, Microsoft didn't get to where they are by handing out freebies, however I wouldn't mind upgrading to the next level for 1/2 price.
