New Xbox 360 service is the future of home entertainment
BT and Microsoft team up to offer unbeatable media experience
By James Stables on 07 January 2008
Microsoft has announced a brand new partnership with BT to provide high definition entertainment through the Xbox 360.
From the middle of 2008 BT Vision customers will be able to use their Xbox 360 instead of a set top box, to receive on-demand TV, and view it in glorious high definition. The Xbox 360 Elite and Premium consoles now come with HDMI capabilities.
BT Vision will link into Xbox LIVE so users can enjoy the community benefits of the service such as instant messaging, chat and game invitations while they are watching TV.
The service is powered by the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV platform, which enables TV content to be delivered through the Xbox 360. IPTV technology like this is widely viewed as a driving force behind new TV services.
This announcement comes exactly a year after Gates showed off the Xbox 360 as a media extender for Windows Vista. With Xbox LIVE now an established brand, we should see more providers eager to provide services for use with Microsoft Mediaroom throughout 2008.
