This past week, reports that Microsoft planned to ship the next client version of it’s Windows Operating System known as Windows "7" in the second half of 2009 are all but true.
Contrary to the many reports of the 2009 release timeframe, Microsoft issued a statement late yesterday regarding the rumored 2009 release date. According to sources Microsoft is still in the early planning stages of development of Windows "7" and the company expects that it will take 3 years to develop the operating system. In addition, the company also said the specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release.
Also, the company said it is continuing to work with it’s partners in the development of Windows "7" and while the company is not sharing additional information on Windows 7 at this time. However, the company is confident that many organizations are recognizing the value in Windows Vista. Of note, sales of Windows Vista licenses have now passed 100 million. In addition, Windows Vista is being adopted by businesses at a rate that is similar to past releases.
In the business market there are early, mainstream and late adopters, with the majority of businesses falling into the category of mainstream. Microsoft is seeing positive indicators that Windows Vista is already starting to move from the early adoption phase into the mainstream, and that more and more businesses are beginning their planning and deployment of Windows Vista.
