Britain obsessed with online video

Over 2 million Brits are obsessive online video self-publicists, posting their own footage onto video sharing websites to promote themselves or their work according to a new study from MSN Video. 

Londoners are the biggest self publicists and 38% of online videos posted from the capital, are made in an attempt to advertise their own work or personality. The rest of the South are the least likely to post self advertising video.

The study looked at users of Soapbox, Microsoft’s video sharing web site, which has been lauded for high quality and uncompressed content, in comparison to its bigger rival YouTube.

Unknowns’ are the real star of the online video show: nearly half (47%) prefer to watch comedy videos of ordinary people rather than celebrities

There’s a clear appetite for banana-skin comedy with a sixth (17%) loving online videos that showcase other people’s misfortunes
 
Commenting on the findings, psychologist Dr David Lewis said:

“We are a nation that has eagerly embraced new technology and are still exploring many of the exciting new possibilities for communicating with others.

“While there may be strong elements of narcissism in some video uploaders, people generally enjoy sharing their own moments as a way of confirming to the world that they exist and have importance.”
