Internet Explorer 7 - Messy by Design

You really have to wonder about the minds of the team who designed Internet Explorer 7, it's like a jigsaw puzzle that has been thrown into the air and designed around wherever the pieces drop.

You really have to wonder about the minds of the team who designed Internet Explorer 7, it's like a jigsaw puzzle that has been thrown into the air and designed around wherever the pieces drop.

Why is the menu bar below the address bar?
Why are the stop and refresh buttons all the way over to the top right?
Why can I not customise the bar and move buttons to where I want?
Why does a tab not have a close button until it is in focus?

So many questions but no answers.  The answers are only in the minds of the design team.

If like me you would like the menu bar above the address bar where it belongs, I will not go into it here, but there is a registry hack which allows you to put it at the top.  Head on over to GeeksAreSexy Blog for a full guide.  If you do not want to access the registry yourself, head on over to Snapfiles.com and download a little tweak program to do it for you.  As ever with tweaking the registry the usual warning applies and please do backup your registry first.

Sadly I do not think there are other tweaks to enable you to customise the buttons.  Yes you can add buttons but cannot really move them to where you want.

I am sure there will be many people out there shouting "Firefox, use that".  Of course Firefox is not perfect either.  Why does it treat an image copy as a download?  In IE7 an image will be saved to my pictures folder where it belongs instead of a default download folder.

My favourite browser has always been Opera.  Its the fastest on earth.  However that is not perfect either - Opera likes to eat away at your file associations and claim ownership of too many things.

I don't like Firefox much (In fact I hate it) but at the moment it is my default browser.  Internet Explorer 7 just feels too restrictive and until they sort out the design I will avoid it wherever possible.

The problem with IE7 is the delete browsing history. Sometimes it will sometimes it won't. And you have to tell it to delete the browsing history. At least with Firefox you can set it to delete the browing history on exit. Opera to is a great browser. Horses for courses, but IE7 still is below par.

I have never tried the delete browsing history as I do not really need to delete it. I like auto-remember :-)
If I need to clean out temp internet files and things if theres a problem, I just use the normal disc cleanup

I think IE7 is fine. It may take a little getting used to, but there is nothing wrong with it. After all, what do you want out of a browser? It is purely a window to the web!

Oh don't get me wrong, I think it is a good browser and works much better than IE6. I just don't like the layout.

Also my credit card company hates it. They havent added it to its list of safe browsers yet so I cant check my account.

To automatically delete temp internet files at the end of each session, go to Tools - Options - Advanced - under the Security section, check "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed."

Becky,

I particularly enjoy using Windows Internet Explorer 7, more-so given the unique features it boasts within Windows Vista including Protected Mode; a feature that is not available for Windows XP. I enjoy using Quick Tabs also, I didn;t realise how quickly it'd improve my Web Browsing.

I have similar views on the three main browsers. I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned Maxthon...

Maxthon is another free browser which, in my opinion, knocks the socks off the others. Think of it as an advanced version of IE7, only with tons more features.

I love it:

www.maxthon.com

Try the beta version.

>Why is the menu bar below the address bar?

Becase you're a stupid user which he enabled the useless menu bar.
menu bar is disabled by default because almost all commands are avaible on the new toolbar. And you can also press ALT.

>Why are the stop and refresh buttons all the way over to the top right?

because IE7 layout is better organized. Firefox buttons are grouped without a logic. IE7 layout is much better than Firefox

>Why can I not customise the bar and move buttons to where I want?

Almost all programs has a fixed layout. I don't understand why people complain for it. IE7 layout well compact compact and buttons well organized.

>Why does a tab not have a close button until it is in focus?

Have you a brain? What happens if an user click on a tab for error?
Anyway, you can close any tab without get the fous, using the middle mouse button.
