7digital announce exclusive deal with Warner Music for the biggest ever DRM free collection on the web
By James Stables on 04 March 2008
In a breakthrough which is set to transform the music world, online music retailer 7digital has announced it will now stock the complete Warner Music catalogue on its online store.
The exclusive deal means that 7digital is the only online music retailer on the internet to offer MP3s by artists such as Madonna, Gnarls Berkley and Red Hot Chili Peppers without digital rights management (DRM.)
These restrictions, placed on music under orders by record labels, were designed to prevent piracy, but have been blamed for hampering online sales of music.
While iTunes has been the major player in digital music, it restricts those without iPods from buying music online. Other services such as Napster have tried to bridge the gap, but those services still load music with restrictions, and often when you cancel your subscription you lose all your music as well.
7digital has pioneered DRM free music over the last year
DRM restrictions like this have been blamed by many spectators for digital poor sales. In the UK just 150 million tracks have been sold in the past three years. That equated to just 1 track, per person, per year.
While for consumers the DRM free music means the ability to enjoy your purchases using any player, media or PC- but there are much wider ramifications.
This is the first time that the mainstream of music has been offered without digital locks, and could just be the catalyst that is needed to kick start the online music industry.
Buying music online can finally feel like buying over the counter, and finally the music industry can move into the digital age.
