Windows Update vs. Apple Software Update vs. Ubuntu Updates.

By anandk on 12 July 2008

Windows has its Windows Update, Mac OS X has its Apple Software Update and Ubuntu has its main repositories. Royal Pingdom has measured the software update access point availability for these three operating systems during Q2 2008 (April, May, June). If that access point is unavailable or inaccessible, the operating system cannot connect and download updates. . .

Let's see if I can make sense of this all. 1.) Ubuntu is FREE ! 2.) I've never received an update Failed Error in Ubuntu update method unless it was MY FAULT ! 3.) I've never had to register Symbolic Links in Ubuntu as I've had to do many times with windows using regsvr.exe to enable new DLL's from the previous update. It is this very sloppy install method that is the source from which my security worries stem from. Conclusion: this comparison is unfair, because if Ubuntu has the financial resources of Microsoft or Apple I sure that the results would be much closer. Secondly I would like this test to be repeated ove the the period of 6 months that te result would differ.
