Pay nothing to phone home when travelling abroad

Stay in touch when aboard with your mates or, heaven forbid, your boss. By Nick Clayton
Published on 20 June 2007

When you’re packing for a holiday one item you won’t need to remember is your laptop. There's a variety of ways you can stay in touch, whether it be an Internet cafe or using your phone abroad for next to nothing. Gone are the days where you only send a postcard or two back home; now you can stay in touch almost daily without spending as much as the holiday itself.

Get Live Messaging anywhere in an Internet Cafe

Wherever your destination, there are few places these days that are far from an internet café. Some cafes turn off Windows Messenger and other services. Sign up for a Meebo Account so you can use your favourite messaging services anywhere.

Be notified on your phone when an E-mail arrives

If you're expecting an urgent e-mail, eNet Notify will send you a text message when an e-mail matching criteria you've set arrives.

The expensive fly in that ointment is the cost of using a mobile abroad. You don’t want to get home and find a huge bill because Sharon from accounts decided to call you. Keep your phone switched off except when you want to collect messages.

Reverse charges on a mobile simply for free

If you really need to be reachable where-ever you are, or if you're a parent whose gap year student is going travelling in South America and you don't mind spending a few pounds making sure they haven't got the deadly Motaba virus, Yak might be for you. It provides a number, which can be routed to most landlines and many mobiles. The reciever pays nothing, but callers pay slightly more than they would to a UK mobile.

Text abroad as cheap as you would in the UK

Avoid paying international rates for sending and receiving texts by using Ipipi. You can register friends for a UK text number to be delivered to your phone or email.

Use VoiP on your phone to call anywhere

Skype often provides the cheapest way of phoning home using Skype Out and, of course, it’s free to other users. Even better, Fring brings this surface to peoples mobiles, so you can phone across the Internet from your mobile phone for even cheaper!
