Got a problem getting started? We’ve got the solutions. By Nick Peers

Q) Can I open the 2007 Office system files in other versions of Microsoft Office?

A) The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 file formats enables other users to view, edit (with some limitations) and save Office Open XML documents in Microsoft Office 2000, XP or 2003.

Q) Is there a way to save my documents in older Microsoft Office formats?

A) Yes there is. Click the Office button and choose Save as, then pick the earlier version of your 2007 Office system application (for example, Word 97-2003 Document). Note that you may lose some information from your document choosing this, so click Prepare > Run Compatibility Checker to see what – if anything – will get lost.

Q) How can I get hold of Microsoft Office OneNote 2007?

A) OneNote 2007 is included as standard in the Home and Student edition of the 2007 Microsoft Office system, or you can order the Upgrade Version for around £65.

Q) I’ve forgotten my email server settings. What can I do?

A) Long winded client set-up is no longer an issue if you’re using Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 – just enter your email address and password and it will go off and try to find your mail server settings for you.

Q) How can I check for problems in the 2007 Office system?

A) The Microsoft Office system comes with its own built-in diagnostics tool, which you’ll find by clicking Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Diagnostics. Follow the instructions to give the 2007 Office system a quick once-over.

Q) Is there a way of changing a program’s options?

A) You can tweak any of the 2007 Office system applications by clicking the Office button and choosing the appropriate Options button at the bottom of the window. Take the time to go through the various sections carefully – it will save you effort in the long run.

Q) How do I import settings from my previous version of Microsoft Office?

A) The simplest way to preserve your old settings is to install the 2007 Office System over your old Microsoft Office installation.

Q) Can I back up my 2007 Office system settings?

A) The back-up tools within Windows Vista include the Microsoft Office system settings, so you can use that to back them up. If you want to transfer them to another PC, use Windows Easy Transfer instead. You’ll find both programs under Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Q) Where can I get hold of free clip art?

A) Whether you’re looking for some cool icons to bring boring documents to life, designing invitations or putting together promotional material for a business, there are over 150,000 fabulous free images online for you to use in your 2007 Office system applications. The simplest way to access them is through the programs themselves. Switch to the Insert tab and click Clip Art to reveal the Clip Art task pane, enabling you to search for the images you want.
