Never miss out on a bargain with eBay Desktop
Buying on eBay often takes commitment to get the best deals. That’s where eBay Desktop comes in, helping to make your buying life easier. By James Stables

eBay addicts and serial buyers will know that finding the best deals is a time consuming business. You have to decide what you want, find an auction, check out the seller, watch the item (often for days) and make a calculated bid – and that’s only the start if there are other interested parties after your bargain.
The trouble is that working within a web site is a little restrictive. You have to load individual web pages to find the information you want, and each one isn’t exactly loaded with data. My resounding memory of my first eBay experience, while buying a Reading Festival ticket for double its face value,
was hammering F5 as the auction closed to check that no one had outbid me.
This can now be consigned to history, as the new eBay Desktop application has changed the entire auction experience, from a static, dry ordeal into an interactive bonanza. The interface is a joy to use and incorporates every facet of the modern internet, with realtime alerts, web feeds integration,
customisation and more.
You can browse auctions and receive up-to-the-second information on items you are watching or bidding on. All the information you need is displayed on the page, and you can tab between screens quickly and slickly. One of my favourite options is to set alert reminders for items. When the auction is within 10 minutes of finishing, an onscreen pop-up will take you straight to the auction page. You can then plan your bids in real time with the help of some flashing red countdown bars. Another fantastic addition to the eBay experience is the use of web feeds. You can put any search query into a feed so you’ll always be able to see when great deals are found. In the feeds menu you can set all kinds of criteria to the search and filter results by sale type, price, locality for larger items and shipping
type. This means you can filter out all the undesirable results and just get the best bargains delivered to your desktop.
The program is built using the new Adobe Air 1.0, which enables online information to be accessed offline. The technology is new, but already Adobe has shown its worth with the usefulness of this eBay Desktop application. Get it now from desktop.ebay.com.
1 SEARCH Load eBay Desktop and use the search box to find what you want. The items are displayed and the search list minimises on the left when viewing an item. Click the arrow to maximise it and carry on searching.
2 REFINE When you search for an item, the taskbar will display ‘Filters and Options’ for the search. You can click any of the options to whittle down the results, omit things you’re not interested in and get to the bargains.
3 RESEARCH When you find an auction you’re interested in, you can use the tabs features to quickly do the research. You can see the seller’s feedback at a glance, the payment types they accept and shipping conditions.
4 ALERT If you want to make sure you’re alerted to the ending of the item, simply select the Reminders tab in the top corner of the Auction pane. Select the appropriate time of alert from 10, 30 or 60 minutes.
5 ADD TO FEEDS If none of the items so far satisfy your query, you can turn the query into a feed. Select the Add to feed option and you’ll be prompted to give the feed a name. All the search conditions are added.
6 EDIT To check your RSS status, just go to the Feeds option. If your RSS feed isn’t finding the bargains that you were hoping for, just click the Edit button. From there you can change or widen any of the search criteria.
