First ever movie to be released on a USB memory stick

Is it time to say goodbye to the age-old movie-on-disc format?
By NickO on 08 September 2008

PNY has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to offer movies on USB memory sticks, so not only do you get somewhere to store all your files; you get some entertainment to take with you on the move too.

The first of these to be released is the original Ghostbusters flick made in 1984 and it’ll be the first of its kind to make the jump from the conventional disc format to flash memory.

Although Sony Pictures Entertainment hasn’t disclosed the format of the movie file, it’s said that it will work in many players, including Windows Media Player. The size of the video is approximately 900MB and has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, so it won’t look particularly impressive on a large monitor, but it’s pretty much ideal for portable media players.

The PNY Ghostbusters 2GB USB movie stick is out to buy now for £29.99 from www.argos.co.uk.

so instead of having hundreds of stable DVD's laying around, I'll have hundreds of volatile flash drives cluttering my space. I guess you could save the movie to your data storage and sell the flash drives. Not to mention I can buy used movies for ~$5.00 instead of $50.00 for the flash drive. And 900MB!! For that price, give me an HD movie on an 8GB drive!!!

I agree - they should be taking advantage of the fact that the internet still isn't quite capable of downloading HD content yet (at least in the UK), and put them on bigger flash drives.

DVD Media has a shelf life much the same as VCR and CDR Material. In general the Format of DVD lasts between 5 and 10 Years. Five years for burned media and longer for original produced media. Flash memory if I recall claims that in general it has an error
recovery mechanism based in its linear design that allows for
reconstruction of the whole from a portion of the stored data. In addition the store shelf life is greater than 10 years for Flash Memory. Although, non of these media formats is optimal for storage of data past twenty years.

In general, the media is likely to be damaged due to usage and makes it more adaptable and friendly to users.
