Take Screenshots the easy Way

By beckyh on Thursday, February 01, 2007

If you have Home Premium Edition or above you may like to know about a lesser known feature called "Snipping Tool".  This feature is part of the feature set for Tablet PCs but you do not need a tablet PC to use it.

In short, Snipping Tool will enable you create and save screenshots very easily.  Do a search for SNIP on your machine and it should be there top of the list of your programs.  When you launch the tool for the first time it will offer to place a handy shortcut in your quicklaunch toolbar.

Once launched you are presented with the following dialogue box:

As the shot shows, simply drag your cursor over the area you want to capture.  When dragged, you get a new window where you can save the screenshot, email it, add text with highlighting and a few other things.

This may only be a very short guide but I hope more people become aware of this extremely useful tool.

Happy Snipping :)

Update:  Just as an after-thought, I might as well also mention the new Sticky Notes.  This is also available in Home premium or above.

It allows you to create post-it notes as reminders.  Unfortunately due to it being a tablet PC feature, it does not recognise keyboard entry, only mouse or pen pointer as you can see from the shot below.  But in addition to writing notes, you can actually record a voice note and have it attached to the sticky note.

Great guide, beckyh - we use the Snipping Tool all the time for taking screenshots for the site and magazine. Just to add: you can get to it by typing 'snip' into the Start menu search box, or even just 'sn' if you don't want to type four letters.

I did say you could get to snip by searching for snip, maybe I was not clear :)

Its a shame the snipping tool does not work in some circumstances - like when lockdown occurs with UAC prompts, etc.

Hi Beckyh,

I have vista premium. After changing some settings to speed up my PC such as turnoff auto indexing, and couple of others. I lost my snipping tool now. Couldn't find anywhere. I created a shortcut in my quick launch and it couldn't locate the file. The original path was c:\windows\system32. Any idea?

A great tool. Thanks!

If you haven't tried it - the speech recognition under Vista really shines. You can "dictate" into sticky notes. Contrary to your note - I can also use the keyboard - but why when the dictation is virtually 100%

This was the first article I read in Windows Vista Magazine and I was impresed in how this program out performed all the previous screen print type programs I've tried before. My suggestion: keep it handy and use it.

Hi beckyh,

Assuming the StickyNotes thing is one of the sidebar gadgets, yup, my laptop keyboard works with it. There was nothing to set up either. Hope you get yours going!

Thank you, but how, (if at all), can I "snipe" a scrolling window. In other words, I cannot seem to be able to 'snipe' more than just the actual window, so if I wanted to 'snipe' all these comments, I cannot do so in one go.
22/02/08 | 03:00

You are right wernid, but where there is a will, there is a way!
Say that you have a window that takes 3 full panels to scroll through, 'snip' the first full panel, and save it as '1 of 3', scroll down to the next panel, but include the last sentence of the first as a link, and 'snip' again. Save as '2 of 3'. Repeat the same for the third panel, and you've got the lot, but again save as 3 of 3.
This is a very useful tool, especially when collecting lots of bits of information from many different sources, much easier to manage than PrtSc and Paint.

Hi, the screenshot of yours isn't working, how do you use the sticky note feature? I've ensured the tablet PC features are enabled.

Creating Short-Cut keys

Hello
I use this tool quite a bit and have created a keyboard shortcut for launching it.

• Click on the Vista Experience Icon
• All Programs - Accessories
• Right click on Snipping Tools and select Properties

Once the properties have been launched click on “Shortcut”, and in the “shortcut key” window enter your chosen keys – I use CTRL+F12 – click OK

And you’re ready to run

great tool welldone for spotting it,

For those who want a different way of this that some may find easier or more flexible, try hitting shift+Prt Sc (Prt Sc or Prt Scr on some keyboards, is short for print screen and it is located in the upper corner area of your keyboard). When you hit this key combo windows (any version) will copy the contents of the screen to the clipboard much like when you copy text using the mouse or ctrl-c shortcut. Then you can simply paste the screen dump into any program that can handle it such as MSPaint or MSWord. If you use MSPaint or some other art program like Adobe Photoshop, you can edit the screen shot and do things like draw little mustaches and horns on the avatar of that guy who flamed you last week and then send it to him via email.

The snipping tool is a really nice feature that I use everyday. I only wish they would have added this in earlier versions of Windows
18/06/08 | 03:08

I found this tool while cruising through Vista in my early days of using it. It's a much easier version of the screen tool that came with Win95. Glad to have it back in an easier version.

This is cool, saves time cutting it out in paint
22/07/08 | 02:33

Thankyou for this post mate

I had read about it previously but had not installed it yet, but definitely will in the near future.
