Windows 7 and light sensors: let there be light

Once in a while, we all leave our lairs to use the laptop in alien environments commonly known as the “outdoors”. One of the forces of evil we face outdoors is of course the sun who wrecks havoc on our fragile LCD displays. One of the new subsystems Windows 7 adds are sensors, creatively called “Windows [...] (more)

Windows Live Messenger blocks www.youtube.com

Not too long ago, users on the Neowin.net forums started complaining about not being able to send YouTube links to their contacts on Windows Live Messenger. I was skeptic at first, but it didn’t take me very long to confirm that is indeed the case. As you can see, any messages that contain in text or [...] (more)

Several hours ago Microsoft released the Zune Spring 2008 Update with a new Zune software package (version 2.5). Embedded in the resource files is an interesting image of a new red “Scorpius” (4/8GB) Zune. Instead of the model available today with a silver backing and red touchpad, this had a black backing and black touchpad. (Left) [...] (more)

Live Mesh “Synchronizing your life” (video)

If by now you still don’t understand what Microsoft’s Live Mesh is, then let this short 60-seconds promotional video originally featured at the Web 2.0 Expo explain it to you in ultra-slow-motion. While you’re at it, see if you can spot and name all the third party products and brands. All I can say there’s a-plenty. [...] (more)

Microsoft’s “It’s not cheating” Facebook competition ends today. XBOX 360 up for grabs. Needs more members.

In a couple of hours, the four-month long “It’s not cheating” Facebook competition hosted by Microsoft is going to end and it’s going to be a close call. Some of you might remember me promoting the istartedsomething.com group all the back in December where I promised to give away the prizes to whomever joined the Facebook [...] (more)

Zune spec spot “Music is life”

It is a lesser known feature of the Zune media player to revive small animals using the hybrid headphone defibrillator, which this following beautifully crafted spec commercial dutifully demonstrates. Check it out. In case you were wondering, “spec” is short for speculative and it means this was an unofficial ad created by a third party as [...] (more)

If you thought the Windows Vista or Office 2007 packaging was fancy, then check out this awesome re-usable packaging for the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000. Microsoft Research video shows off next-generation Windows desktop search?

A recently produced Microsoft Research promotional video (via Bernard Oh) decorated with various snippets of new and upcoming research projects caught my eye when images of a Windows Vista-like search interface flashed for split seconds. Curious like a cat, I sourced a high-resolution copy of the video to take a closer look. Even though the focal [...] (more)
