VISTA..THE HONEYMOON IS OVER!

Brianthesnail explains the ups and downs of the first six months of windows vista
By brianthesnail on 25 September 2007

Hi guys, the euphoria has gone and most of us have the vista operating system on at least one p.c in our homes, and on the whole its not been too bad,my personal experience is using a acer t671 running vista premium with a pentium D (2.8ghz)and 1gb ddr2 ram,and as i used the beta for 6 motnhs before the final release i was a bit unsure in wether to buy a vista ready p.c but as i knew sooner or later i would have to upgrade to vista i thought vista premium would be the ideal version and acer p.c,s are pretty reliable !

on turning the acer p.c on i was quite suprised to see that acer had not finished loading the os,it took around 15 minutes to reach the main options screen(user name and password),this wasnt a problem for me as i knew the way vista loaded and recognized the stage of installtion, however inexperienced users may get stuck and start switching the p.c on and off fearing a fault or dodgy p.c

on vista loading i was greeted with the new vista start up sound and the new vista wallpapers(below)

and straight away i started to try the 3d tilted windows and sidebar, and configuring everything to my own personal taste, then after i uninstalled the free 3 month norton anti-virus free trial and installed avast in its place i was ready to update everything and start using vista

well after six months i am quite happy overall, theres been very few problems and most software i have used has run fine, and even a old windows 98 audio application i have used on xp ran fine on vista (using the program compatibility utility)

one feature which has suprised me is the hardware and driver updating system in vista, unlike the xp version this actually works,i recently bought a usb tv stick from pinnacle and on plugging it into the u.s.b port it went straight on to the vista update and found the drivers, this is a great feature in vista and i must congratulate microsoft on this

on the whole i am very pleased with windows vista and so are most people i speak to,this is the way to go and with windows xp to be removed from the shelves in january 2008 its time we all made the upgrade

all the best guys !

Well written, concise assessment of vista. But apart from the description of the eye-candy it could have been written about xp! Personally I don't think many upgraders will be impressed by the cost of vista in the UK nor will they find any tangible improvement over xp. Several months on from upgrading (a traumatic experience)I still haven't located the 'WOW' factor...

windows vista hey ?
one looking to buy a vista p/c 10 months ago i was told all windows xp items worked on vista ?
well 10 months on i had a new printer a new webcam a new load of software as none of my others worked anymore.
my games had to be given away after i was told they too would work on vista.
to be honest i am sorted now and enjoy vista, but the shops told me loads of s##t about it and i believe they wernt even given any training on what to tell the customers as this has since been confirmed by p/c world manager himself when i got chatting yesterday.
i hate being told one thing but then find out there aere no drivers for any of my items i used on xp.
SO ON THE WHOLE A GREAT SYSTEM.
STILL NEEDS DRIVERS FOR OLDER ITEMS TO BE ISSUED.
IM NOW HAPPY ITS SORTED WITH THE EXTRA COST I ENCURED AFTER BUYING IT,THE LIKES OF PRINTER AND SOFTWARE ETC.
I THINK THERE ARE MORE UPDATES ON XP THAN THERE IS ON VISTA,AND ITEMS SOLD IN SHOPS STILL DONT SAY VISTA COMPATABLE EVEN THOUGH THE SHOPS INSIST THEY ARE OK ON VISTA.
THAT WHY I CANT SEEM TO FIND A TV CARD AT P/C WORLD WITH VISTA ON IT YET THEN.UNLESS I PAY OVER £69.99 AS I WAS TOLD AT P/C WORLD.
SO HENCE THEY STILL NEED TO GET THINGS SORTED OUT ON THERE PACKAGING STILL.
I BOUGHT A GAME FOR XP AFTER I WAS TOLD IT WORKS ON VISTA,GOT IT READY AND IT WOULDNT WORK.SO HENCE EVERYONE IS STILL CONFUSED EVEN IN MAJOR RETAIL STORES.
ANYWAY LIKE TO HEAR OTHERS VIEWS ON THIS SUBJECT.ALL THE BEST MIDEON.

For being the most tested version of windows ever Microsoft has not done a very good job of making it backwards compatible. There mealy not much of an incentive to upgrade to vista.
