Ready Boost your Windows Vista

Running short of memory for your PC?
By ranjanaj on Monday, March 05, 2007

So your existing memory seems less for a good performnace on Vista?

Well, here's the solution!

USB thumbdrives  are available as cheap resources for storage these days.

Just plug in a USB flash drive with at least 256 MB capacity into your PC/notebook. This will run the autoplay and will present you with an option of:

"Use this to speed up my system"

alongwith the other regular options.

Once you choose the above option, it opens up the 'Properties'page for your thumb drive and lets you decide the amount of space in the drive that you would like to shell out for use as RAM!

So just choose amount of memory you wanna add, n it just adds up to your existing RAM leading to a good increase in the system memory!!

Yipee!!

Whats more ... you can even use a CF card or an SD card as a "Ready Boost" memory device for your Windows Vista!

Happy Windowing!!!!

ReadyBoost has been around since the beta days of Vista. Yes it works. It works best for machines that don't have enough memory to start with (1GB or less) and you NEED to have FAST flash memory or Vista won't use it. After many USB stick purchases I found you need to have a minimum of 25mb/sec read and 15mb/sec write (and of course larger then 256Mb)capability for Vista to use it for ReadyBoost.

I found that when used with a box with 1GB memory my 1GB USB ReadyBoost device gave a good boost to performance. I never tried it with a 512Mb Vista box since that configuration was just to PAINFUL to work with at all. Once I installed 2GB of RAM into the box the usefulness of the Readyboost device was almost nil.

What ready boost is really good for is to help people who have marginal machines and who don't want to open them up to add REAL RAM.

I am using my 2GB SanDisk Cruzer in ReadyBoost mode; however I do not see any increase in perfomance nor less RAM resources being used.

Maybe its because I have 2Gb of RAM installed?

I have 2 gig installed and when trying to use the ready boost I did not notice any speed to my system so I am guessing that I am in the same boat as some of you above as well. Now if there was a way to play some cool games on my gateway using an external video card.....

3 gig installed on my system [6400 ocz platinum] before i used my ipod as a readyboost device as a test - it was very slow.

Now it runs like a dream.

I have 2GB RAM already on my laptop. Will using a 2GB Jump drive make it a total of 4GB or will it use one or the other?
