Make an online radio show

Aspiring to be a DJ is a lot like wanting to become a rock star or movie actor; it's a daydream fantasy that only a handfull actually get to live out.

Fortunately, the Internet can expand the size of that hand to one of a giant, giving almost anyone the chance to start their own radio show. So if you've ever wanted to be the next Jimmy Saville, here's how to do it.

1. Sound Check

Plug your mic into your PC and click on Sound in Control Panel. Check that the socket you’re using is set to Default and make sure the levels are loud enough in the Properties menu.

2. Record

Once the mic is set up you can record your broadcast in Audacity. The window will show your broadcast in the form of a sound wave. This can be cut, copied, highlighted, deleted and moved as you wish.

3. Add Effects

You can make your broadcast more professional by adding effects or by ‘normalising’ it. This will take the natural peaks and falls in volume and even them out for a better sound.

4. Export to MP3

Audacity requires a download which can be found here to allow you to export in MP3 format. Download the file and follow the onscreen instructions.

5. Upload Cast

When you’ve signed up and downloaded the Mercora program you can start adding your tracks to its playlist. Go to the My Library menu to add tracks or any other media.

6. Go Live

Right-click your file to add it to the webcast queue. This will move the file to My Station, where right-clicking again will bring up the Webcast Now button. Press it to make your station live.
