Which version of Windows Vista is best for you?

We know that six types of Windows Vista can be daunting, so here's the differences.
Published on Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Microsoft has decided to make not one version of Vista, but five - plus a sixth "starter" version for emerging markets as well as 64-bit versions of each edition for heavyweight PCs. Though no matter which version you go for, you actually get all of them: Microsoft has put every version of Vista on the same installation disc, which means that if you decide you want a more powerful edition you don't need to trek to the shops. Instead, you can contact Microsoft, pay for the upgrade and unlock a more powerful version of Vista instantly. It's a stroke of marketing genius, because an even better version of Vista is never more than a few clicks (and a credit card payment) away.

So what are the different versions, what's in them and what do they cost? The table below shows you the various Vista versions along with their price tags. Our personal opinion is that unless you can see a specific reason to purchase anything else, go with Home Premium. In terms of price and functionality, there is no better option.

What you get

Cost (full/upgrade versions)*

Windows Vista Home Basic

All the core features of Windows Vista, including the new firewall, a better Security Center, parental controls, Windows Search and so on.

£154.99 /£99.99

Windows Vista Home Premium As Home Basic but with the funky Aero theme, MediaCenter and integrated DVD burning. You'll also need this version if you want to install Windows Vista on a Tablet PC. Thanks to the inclusion of MobilityCenter, it's better suited to laptop use than Basic. £184.99 / £149.99
Windows Vista Business Broadly similar to Home Premium but lacking MediaCenter and movie/DVD applications. Instead, you get Remote Desktop, domain support, integrated file and folder encryption and other business-minded tools. Business can also be installed on a Tablet PC.

£250.00 / £189.99

Windows Vista Enterprise As Business but with entire drive encryption, multi-language interfaces and Virtual PC Express for running alternative operating systems in a windowed environment (e.g. so you can still use all those old programs that no longer work by running Windows XP within Windows Vista).

No off-the-shelf single-licence availability.

Windows Vista Ultimate All of the above.

£325.00 / £249.99
